Bedwetting

Evidence-based management of nighttime bedwetting for children and young people, with compassionate strategies that work with your child.

Bedwetting is more common than you think

Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) affects approximately one in five children at age five, one in ten at age seven, and around one in fifty teenagers. Despite how common it is, it remains one of the most emotionally charged childhood bladder issues, with many families feeling isolated or unsure where to turn.

At The Yellow Spot Clinic, we want families to know: bedwetting is a medical condition, not a character flaw. It is not caused by deep sleep, laziness, or emotional problems, and children do not wet the bed on purpose.

Why does bedwetting happen?

Nocturnal enuresis typically results from a combination of factors, which may include:

  • The bladder producing more urine overnight than it can comfortably hold

  • Reduced arousal — the child does not wake up in response to a full bladder

  • Bladder overactivity or reduced functional capacity

  • A family history of bedwetting (which is very common)

  • Constipation, which can compress the bladder

  • In some cases, contributing daytime bladder symptoms

Our approach to bedwetting

Dr Delaney and Dr Roy take a systematic approach to nocturnal enuresis. We begin by understanding your child's complete picture — their health history, voiding and bowel habits, fluid intake, sleep patterns, and how the bedwetting is affecting their daily life and self-esteem. From there, we develop a stepwise management plan.

Treatment options we discuss with families may include:

  • Fluid and dietary adjustments

  • Voiding routine modifications

  • Bedwetting alarm therapy — the most effective long-term intervention for many children

  • Medication, where clinically appropriate (such as desmopressin)

  • Combined approaches for children with both daytime and nighttime symptoms

Supporting the whole family

We know that bedwetting affects the whole household — not just the child. Our team provides practical guidance for parents and carers alongside clinical treatment for your child. We also ensure that children themselves feel respected, heard, and never blamed throughout the process.

If your child is still bedwetting and it is causing distress at home or limiting their participation in sleepovers or camps, please do not hesitate to make an appointment. Help is available.

Bedwetting is treatable, and the right support can make an enormous difference. Reach out to The Yellow Spot Clinic today to book a consultation for your child.
